Bizarro-Superman is a vampire
June 14, 2009 | 1 Comment
Hey there. I just wanted to make a quick post on an idea that came my way the other day. I was talking with my husband about the graphic novel 52, Vol. 1 that we recently purchased. He had not yet had the time to read it, but I did and in a way that doesn’t give anything away mentioned to him that there was a cult organization in it that worshiped Superman. The comic explains that the “s” on Superman’s chest is not in fact the letter “s” from the English language alphabet but in fact is a character from the Kryptoian language that stands for life. Or something like that.
My husband’s immediate response was “Then, that would make Bizarro-Superman a vampire.” I must have looked shocked because he went on to explain, “Superman gets his power from the sun, his “s” is the symbol of life, he is a protector of humanity largely because he is compelled to protect them. Therefore, it would stand to reason that Bizarro-Superman would be a vampire—a being that would be hurt by the sun; the “reverse s” would be the symbol of unlife, not necessarily death; and someone who is naturally inclined to predate on humanity. A vampire.”
To be honest, it it’s a perfectly logical explanation and in a rational world would stand to make for a reasonable argument. However, the world of comics is not entirely based on things like logic and reason, which is why they are so fun. Perhaps in the go-back machine my husband’s interpretation of Bizarro-Superman would have been a better fit, but one never knows. It seems like every few years titles have to reinvent themselves to keep ahead of the curve and appeal to a new and more modern and savvy reader. Maybe one day the vision of Vampire Bizarro-Superman may come to pass.

I thought Bizarro Superman had been around for quite awhile, since 1958 in fact. I’ve seen people wearing the reverse S t-shirts at conventions for years. Isn’t there a whole thing about more than one Bizarro Superman being created? One as a result of a duplication accident when Superman was a teen, the next by Lex Luthor and I think yet another by the one Lex created.
